Petexbatun Lagoon and Aguateca Ruins from Flores
Tour starts from Flores
We will visit Petexbatun Lagoon and Aguateca Archeological Site that is near Sayaxché, in the small villages of Tamarindo and Tamarindito. We will take a boat tour trough Petexbatun's calm and clear waters.
In Aguateca you will experience a walk into a Maya site located in northern Guatemala's Petexbatun Basin, Its center consisted on the Palace Group, which was probably a royal residential compound, and a Main Plaza. The center was occupied from about 200 B.C. until about 800 A.D. when the city was attacked and ransacked.
Aguateca has more than 700 buildings and currently, 11 of them are restored. When visiting Aguateca you can observe an artificial bridge of rock that crosses the natural crack that divides the site; Which remains solid and in use since the original occupation of the city. Aguateca has a viewpoint that provides fabulous views of the river and the Petexbatun lagoon. This route is very pleasant, finding both fishermen and mangrove swamps, as seen by stealthy crocodiles, huge and timid iguanas on the shores.
